General any cut that that goes beyond the dermis (the skin) and into the subcutaneous fat below should be stitched. That means any cut more than about 1/8 inch or .3 cm deep. If the cut is located such that the edges are pulled apart either at rest or through normal activity then stitches are needed. If it won't stop bleeding, get stitches.
Most cuts can generally be closed as long as 24hrs after the injury. However, if the method of injury is at a greater risk of infection (cut by something dirty, any bites, ect) the timeframe gets smaller. Most cuts in this category need to be stitched within 6-8 hours.Health Question & Answer

I'm a lifeguard, and if the wound is deep enough to bleed aton, you will need stitches, now if you see bone or like torn like flesh in the wound you will also need stitches. put a band aid on it if your just got a scrape or some thing shallow cuts and so on..try to get in and get them within less then 42 hours. if you can right after the accident happens. now you can get stitches long after you get cut or what not but since the wound is healing already by then(most wounds do) they might not put them in because its healing by its self and to put the stitches in will disrupt what ever your body is doing to heal its self.
areas like the head, hands, legs/feet are where most stitches are applied. also the mouth area(which counts as head) on the lip.

Remember put pressure on the wound if it is on your arm or leg you can find your artery and put pressure on it to help stop bleeding.(Only do this if the wound is great and you know what your doing)

In general, if the wound is deep enough to bleed a lot, stitches are needed. If you can see bone or torn flesh within the wound, stitches are necessary. If it just barely tears the skin, a bandage is probably all you need. And, as a general rule, stitches can be applied at almost any time, though they're usually only put in within a couple days of the injury, since after that the cut will start healing on its own, and the stitching would disrupt this.
