Can swollen lymph nodes burst when there is an infection in the body?!

Question: Can swollen lymph nodes burst when there is an infection in the body.?
My friend has swollen glands around her throat due to a bad tooth infection and is on antibiotics, which doesn't seem to be helping. The glands are still swollen so bad that they hurt to the touch. Is there a possibility that they can burst if too swollen.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
if the nodes are swollen of an infection nearby they cannot burst. there's however an infection of the lymph nodes themselves (lymphadenitis) which can - if not treated right (usually with i.v. antibiotics) - lead to abscesses of the lymphnodes and surrounding structures. so in that case they could "burst".
you didn't mention how long your friend is taking antibiotics - they do take a little while to work. if your friends symptoms don't get better after 2 or 3 days he/she should consult her doctor again. if the lymph nodes were swollen pretty bad it can take longer than the actual infection to get better.Health Question & Answer

No, not really. The swelling can cause damage to the nodes, and can put pressure on other organs...or in the case of the throat, close off the esophagus and trachea if the nodes swell enough, but they won't burst. Luckily, anything that serious will be noticed long before it starts doing damage or threatening the airway. Health Question & Answer

probably not, although i'm not an expert.Health Question & Answer
