I have had a lot of numbness in my hand, should I be worried?!

Question: I have had a lot of numbness in my hand, should I be worried.?
I've been having issues lately, especially first thing in the morning with numbness in my hand. It's only one arm (left), and I think it has to do with the position I sleep.

I'm relatively healthy, 120/80 bp, blood sugar 80, and I'm 5'8" 180 lbs so I'm not grossly overweight. It's a little shoulder pain and causes numbness in my hand. Should I go to the doctor.? or should I just figure out another way to sleep.?

Just curious...

Answers:
Yes, I would strongly advise you going to the doctor as it may be the following:

1.) Constricted arteries (bad blood flow causes numbness, and in long sessions can cause nerve damage)

2.) It could also be a pinched nerve in your shoulder, which if it happens to be the case, there's not a lot you can do for it except get massages on your shoulder to ease the pain (and it will get older as you age.)

3.) Various other things

Visit your doctor and have them do a diagnostic :-)Health Question & Answer

It is most likely your sleep position, but if you also lean on your elbow alot (against a desk, for instance) it can permanently pinch off the nerve and lead to numbness and nerve damage. I would recommend attempting to change your sleep position and watching yourself to make sure you are not leaning on that particular arm alot. Health Question & Answer

It is probably just positioning. Does the numbness go away quickly after you wake up or does it last for awhile.? If it lasts it may be some minor nerve damage due to "your sleep position". It's not really anything to worry about, but if it persists, or gets worse, see your doctor.Health Question & Answer

shoulder pain and hand numbness could be pinched nerves in your arm or your neck or a herniated cervical disc. It might go away on its own or it might get worse. It won't hurt you to just take some OTC analgesics or Naprosyn. Those might help if its not too severe. See a doctor if it continues. Health Question & Answer

You most likely have a nerve that is being compressed in your elbow or forearm. Go see a Physician as this can be easily fixed. Continuing the problem can create permanent damage over a period of time.
