It would depend on what the problem is and how you respond to heat or ice. Based on type of injury: If you are experiencing muscle soreness I would go with heat to relax the muscles. If the pain is in one area, where you can put your finger on exactly where it hurts, It would be more likely that you have a tendonitis and you should use ice. (15 minutes on and 45 minutes off for up to three days. After that see your doctor if it is still a problem) For either problem, I would also do very gentle stretches when the muscle is warm. Move the arm in all direction to the point of stretch or the end of the range. Don't cause pain with these motions....the movement should be gentle. Based on how your body reacts: if ice makes things worse, then you use heat. If heat causing problems then ice. Sometimes using the "proper" treatment for the condition isn't always the best. You have to listen to you body.

Actually, you can use both. Alternate cold and heat. Cold will numb the area so pain is gone or less, and the heat will relax the muscles to let things go back in place. Health Question & Answer
Usually if you exercise, in your case dancing, you would apply heat to it to relax your muscles. Try taking a hot bath at night and some ibuprofen (tylenol wont help your muscles)Health Question & Answer
