It sounds like it may be a migraine. The sensitivity to light is one indicator. Migraines can exhibit various symptoms, and the pain can be in a number of locations - often or typically affecting just one side of the head. In any case, even if it is a migraine, you should check it out with a doctor. Later in this post, I have provided a number of links which will provide additional information. This one will better help you diagnose the headache:

I suffer from migraines also, and have recently learned a few things that have really helped prevent them.

If it is a migarine, and if you get these often, you may wish to try preventatives medication like Feverfew (100mg/day), and Magnesium tablets (2 X 250 mg/day).? These have worked for many people where other medications haven't, and there is clinical evidence supporting their effectiveness. The other nice thing about these is that they are over the counter. I found that this combination has helped prevent the headaches, helped reduce the intensity, helped me sleep better and reduced the exhaustion. There are prescription medications that can prevent headaches also, such as beta-blockers, and anti-depressants are used also (not because of depression, but because of a side effect of the medication which helps prevent migraines). The combination of feverfew and magnesium has significantly reduced my headaches and significantly improved my quality of life. It can take 4-6 weeks before they start being effective.

also, avoid taking pain relievers too frequently. If you take more than 10-15 of these per month, they can actually start causing the headaches.

The other thing that I would suggest is a combination of triptans (Imitrex, Zomig, etc.) and Metoclop. You can up to about 10 of these month before they start causing headaches. The triptans are not pain relievers - they actually work only on migraines and pain relievers can be taken in conjunction with the triptans. Metoclop is an anti-nausea medication, but it also has anti-migraine properties and will help the absorption (and thus effectiveness) of other medications. All of these require prescriptions and therefore you need to first see a doctor, who may wish to do a catscan to rule out other possible causes first.

Massage may also be helpful. Press on your shoulders and neck and see if you feels any pain. If so, that may be a contributing factor to the on-going headaches.

If the pain is so severe that you cannot stand it, you may wish to go to the emergency / outpatients of the nearest public hospital If it is a migraine, they may give you a shot of something much stronger than you can get in a pharmacy to attack the headache.Health Question & Answer

It could be a migraine. Stress is a common trigger. Light sensitivity is also extremely common with migraines. Usually the majority of pain from a migraine headache will be located on one temple (one side or the other, not both). You might have some radiating pain in your forehead, down your jaw or the base of your neck, but you should be able to point to the worst pain with 1 finger. If the pain is spread out more than that, it is probably not a migraine.

The best way to tell is to go to an urgent care clinic or ER and tell them you think you have a migraine and ask for Imitrex. Its a Rx migraine medicine. If your migraine goes away within 1 to 2 hours then you had a migraine. If it doesn't go away, you didn't have one and the Imitrex won't hurt you.Health Question & Answer

Don't use codeine on migraine, it's a complicated headache to get and is a lot more than muscle spasm.

As you are not sure, you need to look for a rash because of light sensitivity. If you do have a one that does not go with pressing down of a tumbler glass, call an ambulance.

Migraines can stop as fast as they came on,if you cut out cheese and can take aspirin followed by paracetamol followed by a coke, you may be surprised at what happens
300mg aspirin followed by 500mg paracetamol+can of coke or caffeine drink. (ONCE OFF DOSE-WAIT )
migraine HAS TO BE treated gently, not with big doses of tablets,so i reccomend relaxing and trying to sleep-- unless you have the rash or continuous high blood pressure and not 'white coat blood pressure'.
DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN IF YOU HAVE AN ULCER
IAM NOT A DOCTOR

Take your temperature

My bet is it's now stoppedHealth Question & Answer
