Huge lump on side of neck, it ?!

Question: Huge lump on side of neck, it .?
A few days ago I noticed a lump on the side of my neck. I just had a cold a few weeks ago, so I figured it was just a swollen lymph node gland. I've also had neck pains and headaches because of the lump. This morning I woke up with a terrible sore throat on the side w/ the lump, and thought maybe I had mono since my boyfriend just had it. When I looked in the mirror though, my tonsils weren't really swollen too terribly, and the pain is mostly coming from the swollen lump. The lump has also doubled in size. It's not like its a tumor or anything because it's mobile. I'm going to the doctor today but anyone have any idea what's going on.? Is it just a swollen lymph node gland.?Health Question & Answer

Here's some info on what other's have suggested..I'm not sure myself what it is but if it's doubled in size you need to get it checked out!! If you had a sinus infection and not a cold, an abscess is possible.

Feel better honey!!

Mononucleosis

What are the symptoms.?

The most common symptoms of mono are a high fever, a severe sore throat, swollen glands and tonsils, and weakness and fatigue. Symptoms usually start 4 to 6 weeks after you are exposed to the virus.

Mono can cause the spleen to swell. Severe pain in the upper left part of your belly may mean that your spleen has burst. This is an emergency.

Usually only self-care is needed for mono.

* Get plenty of rest. You may need bed rest, which could keep you away from school or work for a little while.
* Gargle with salt water or use throat lozenges to soothe your sore throat.
* Take acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Advil) to reduce fever and relieve a sore throat and headaches.
* Avoid contact sports and heavy lifting. Your spleen may be enlarged, and impact or straining could cause it to burst.

In severe cases, medicines called corticosteroids may be used to reduce swelling of the throat, tonsils, or spleen.

Mumps

What are the symptoms.?

Mumps can affect many body systems and cause flu-like symptoms, abdominal pain, swollen cheeks, and swollen and painful testicles. But up to 20 out of 100 people who are infected with the mumps virus do not have any symptoms.2

The incubation period-the time from when a person is first infected with the virus until the first symptoms develop-is usually 16 to 18 days, although it can be as long as 25 days. Infected people can spread the virus 1 to 2 days before symptoms start and for 5 days after symptoms start.

Peritonsillar Abscess
Peritonsillar Abscess Overview

A peritonsillar abscess forms in the tissues of the throat next to one of the tonsils. An abscess is a collection of pus that forms near an area of infected skin or other soft tissue.

The abscess can cause pain, swelling, and, if severe, blockage of the throat. If the throat is blocked, swallowing, speaking, and even breathing become difficult.

* When an infection of the tonsils (known as tonsillitis) spreads and causes infection in the soft tissues, a peritonsillar abscess may result.

* Peritonsillar abscess is relatively common in adults but rare in infants and young children.Health Question & Answer

DARK FORCES AHHHHHHHHHHealth Question & Answer

It doesn't sound like mumps as others have suggested. Mumps (an infection of your parotid gland--the major saliva producing glad) is located on your JAW under your cheeks, NOT on the side of your neck.

There are many important clues in your question.

Firstly...yes, they are most likely swollen lymph nodes. Secondly, you've been exposed to mononucleosis which can cause HUGE lymph nodes and a really bad sore throat. Sound familiar.?

Please call your doctor and get in to to see him/her...but let them know you've been exposed to mono so you won't sit in the waiting room potentially infecting everyone else.Health Question & Answer

Possibly you could have the mumps.
nyone who is not immune from either previous mumps infection or from vaccination can get mumps. Before the routine vaccination program was introduced in the United States, mumps was a common illness in infants, children and young adults. Because most people have now been vaccinated, mumps is now a rare disease in the United States. Of those people who do get mumps, up to half have very mild, or no symptoms, and therefore do not know they were infected with mumps. The most common symptoms are fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite followed by onset of parotitis (swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears
