As long as the rib looks like it's going to heal ok, they will just give you pain medication. However, a broken rib can cause serious problems if is severely broken and they may have to do surgery to correct the rib so it will heal right as well as to prevent further damage.

That depends on the extent of the injury. if you have what is called a floating rib injury, they may actually cast you to prevent you from puncturing a lung.
They do not bind the ribs anymore as it has been discovered that the loss of flexion in the breathing effort can cause pneumonia.

They will xray to make sure the ribs are indeed broken, and if they are , to make sure they are not in-dangering any organs or soft tissue. Besides medication, they may give you a chest binder to protect your chest and ribs. They will tell you to rest, and to breathe deep, even though it may be painful, it can protect you from getting pneumonia. Heating pads or cooling pads may be something else they would recommend. Make sure you eat healthy so you will heal faster, take it easy, and your Dr may provide you with information on the best position to sleep. Xray first then may tape up the affected area so you won't move so much. Then possibly pain meds. Have to make absolutely sure the rib is set right and not cause lifelong problems. Go to the Dr. be sure to keep yourself safe and well.Health Question & Answer
