When I was in third grade, I accidentally stabbed myself in the hand with a pencil and got the graphite stuck in there.....that was about 20 years ago and there aren't any problems with my hand, other than there is a small grey-stained area. Your GP is right. There are cells in your body which work to break down foreign bodies (macrophages). The macrophages will work to remove the graphite. At best, they will comepletely clear the stuff and you won't have any trace. Or, you might have a small stain, like me. Worst case scenario is that you get an extreme giant-foriegn body cell reaction and you get a small fibrous lump in your thigh. In which case, it would be easily removed by the doctor. You're not at risk for cancer or anything and you can't be poisoned. So sit back and relax, you're fine.Health Question & Answer

There's nothing in a pencil that will do you any long term harm. If it was a year ago, any problems caused by bacteria would have sorted themselves out. Graphite is completely harmless and if you have got a bit stuck under the skin it won't cause any problems. Although it's called a pencil lead, it's 100% carbon.Health Question & Answer

You could stab yourself with a rubber.?.?
