I would see your chiropractor if you have one. The chiropractor can figure out exactly what the problem is and work on your neck. He or she will be able to give you recommendations on what you can do at home to help the neck heal up quicker also.

Without knowing the exact details of your case I can give you a general rule of thumb - most people with neck pain have a misalignment(s) in the neck creating nerve pressure. Mostly it is in the form of foward head posture and loss of the neck curvature.

Alot of people aren't happy with the pillow they sleep with also.

The cervical traction neck pillow is a very comfortable and it helps correct the neck alignment too. http://www.arc4life.comHealth Question & Answer

Most neck pain is due to strain and spasm of the neck muscles. The common crick in the neck upon arising is one example of neck muscle strain. This type of neck pain can be adequately treated at home. Neck pains that require the attention of a doctor include those due to meningitis or a pinched nerve. Neck pain, like back pain, is slow to improve and may take several weeks to completely resolve. If pain doesn't lessen in a week, call the doctor.
Neck pain relief: An ordinary bath towel, wrapped around the neck at bedtime, may alleviate some neck pain caused by poor sleeping habits. And good luck.Health Question & Answer

More information about you is helpful. Does it hurt only with movement for example. Older folks get arthritis type pain, and those with a recent car wreck can have whiplash. One sided pain in a young person starting out of the blue and not related to trauma may be due to sternocliedomastoid muscle spasm 2nd to a virus infection. If it is this motrin, moist warm compresses are best. Stretches or massage therapist if it is out of control tomorrow. I've had this a few times, usually after a cold.

One sided neck pain is usually not a medical emergencyHealth Question & Answer

Deep tissue massage works well, especially if the heating pad isn't. You might have some tough knots in there. And if you've had them for a few days, they only get worse.

As for the reason for the symptoms, it could be many things. If this is a chronic and/or recurring issue here are some things to consider:

Do you have a desk job that involves computer work.? Make sure your office setup is ergonomically correct. Most offices have a specialist who checks over everyone's cubicles a few times a year. If not, ask HR to get someone to do so. also, look at your posture. Do you wear comfortable shoes, carry a bag over only one shoulder.? You may need a better mattress or pillow. A more common reason is tension. Is there a lot of stress in your life right now.?Health Question & Answer

Here is a link that may help you figure it out but the heat should have helped if it is a soft tissue injury
