I work at a computer all day too. As someone who suffered with neck pain for over 20 years and overcame this problem, here are some simple pieces of advice:

1. Normal neck pain (ie you don't have a slipped disk or a serious disorder) is caused by either an accute injury or simply bad posture. My neck pain was caused by bad posture.

What is the proper posture one should have.? Your ears should be aligned with the center of your shoulders when someone looks at you from the side. There are two ways to achieve this simple position, one is the right way and one is the wrong way. The wrong way is to crane your neck backwards so you are looking up. This will cause further symptoms. The right way is to pull your chin in like a military man. Remember the walk like an Egyptian video.? Like that...

Picture your head being like a bowling ball on a stick. It is easier to hold up if you keep it vertical. If you lean the ball forward, like most people do, then your whole neck, especially the base, has constant pressure on it.

2. Exercises for the neck if you just have normal neck pain due to bad posture (meaning not a serious condition)

Egyptian Military Man movements - Pull your chin in, moving your ears backward and straightening out the neck, then let your head move forward (but not too far) and move your head like an Egyptian, back and forth. This will strengthen the ligaments in your neck.

Forward and Back neck arches... First, assume the military man position (pull your neck in so that your ears are aligned with the center of your shoulders). Roll your head forward about 10 degrees using a hand to apply resistance. Then, roll your head back to the straight position using your other hand to apply gentle resistance. If you feel pain going back, make sure you are not craning your neck.

Side to Side neck arches... Assume the military man position and gently apply pressure using your hands and move the head from side to side, tiltling your ears closer to your shoulders.

Neck Turns... Assume the military man position and gently apply pressure to the sides of your face using your hands and turn your head to the left and right keeping your nose at the same height but just turning it.

3. Neck roll at night and the morning. Take a couple hand towels and fold them in half and roll them into a tight roll. Put this roll on your pillow and lie down on it with your neck, between your shoulders and your head. This helps reshape the neck to be like a bow (like a bow and arrow bow). People who read and work on computers tend to have straight necks that point forward... called Reader's Neck. This towel roll will reshape your neck after a while (maybe years but it will eventually do it). Do 10 minutes in the morning and at night.

4. Get yourself really good pilllows and try to sleep on your side with your neck in the military type position rather than curled forward (that is the position that will make your neck worse). The fetal position was great as a baby but it will mess your neck up when you are older.

About Doctors and Chiropractors... they help when you are in lots of pain. Whenever I would go the chiropractor I would leave his office feeling much less pain (usually no pain) when I left. The problem was I kept up my bad habbits and the pain would return after a day or so. Doctors will give you pain meds... The long term answer is you have to change your posture when sitting and walking and take matters into your own hands. I highly recommend that link I posted above... it helped change my life.

First, take regular breaks from the computer. Get up, move around, stretch out your neck.

Next, make sure your work station is as ergonomically friendly as possible. Make sure you are looking straight ahead, you have a comfortabl chair, and your screen is not to far away.

Periodically do some neck stretches and some neck exercises. The best stretch is lateral head tilts. The best exercise is head retractions because most people who put alot of hours on the computer start to develop foward head carriage - http://www.arc4life.com/site/615058/page...

Get a good neck pillow for sleeping. The cervical traction neck pillow is good for relieving pain and also correcting forward head posture.

Even easier - it is called magnesium! The electromagnetics around the computer just blows through your magnesium and your muscles tense up. (I bet you are constipated too!) Magnesium is the answer. Get some tablets at the store. It is very inexpensive. Or eat more blueberries which are high in magnesium!Health Question & Answer

I don't know what they are called, but my mom uses one of those things you put in the microwave to heat up, then put it around your neck. It's like a heating pad. also, my sister in Seattle sees a chiropractor named Dr Walia for her neck pain.
