My dad has just had it done and he's 86. He stayed in hospital 5 days. He did all the exercises that he was told to do and after 6 weeks he's walking about great - no stick or anything. He's very determined and has a positive attitude and I think this has helped him get over it so quickly. He actualy didn't need physio as he did so well. They didn't even put him to sleep for the op - they gave him and epidural and the pain was controlled with pain killers. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

The pain's not too bad, and you can always ask the nurses for some painkillers if it hurts. They'll be happy to give you something. You'll be in hospital for around 3 days afterwards. This can vary depending on the hospital you're in, the doctor you have and the complexity of your condition. If you were to have any complications, you would be in for longer, but this is rare for a knee replacement.

You will need physio, as your new knee will be very stiff at first. This will probably be given to you when you're in hospital, and you'll attend a clinic to have some more after you've been discharged. You'll also need to go to a post-operative clinic with your doctor some time after the surgery, to check that all's well. After the surgery, most people can return to work after a couple of weeks.Health Question & Answer

I have known people who have had this operation and they have been over the moon with the results. It is like having a new lease of life with regards to mobility, once they have recovered from the op, and they have wished that they had had the operation earlier.

It is difficult for a person to say how bad the pain is. We all have different pain thresh holds, and what may be excruciating for one person may not be as bad for another person. You will be given pain relief.

With regards to you being scared, this is a natural reaction as if we are honest we all are concerned or scared to some extent when having to have an operation. Maybe you could try some relaxation techniques to prepare yourself for the op. Remember be positive. Think of how bad the pain is now, and afterwards once you are over the op and fully mobile again, you will not have that pain.

Good luck and hope all goes well.Health Question & Answer

Hi, I know someone who had this done...she was in her late 50's and very heavy. She used a device called actipatch to reduce the post surgical swelling at the implant site and recovered very quickly...her doctor was surprised by how well and how fast she healed- and he was very skeptical of the actipatch device. You may want to check into it.Health Question & Answer

my grandmother had this a few weeks ago. She was in the hospital for 4/5 days after surgery and is still doing physio therapy. This is her second knee replacement surgery. I won't lie to you, she says it's very painful HOWEVER it isn't close to the pain before the surgery.
