Recovery time for a sprained ankle?!

Question: Recovery time for a sprained ankle.?
I sprained my ankle on monday. I play field hockey and my school trainers haven't given me an exact date of recovery. Our first state game is on Monday (tomorrow) and I've been pretty much off my foot/in a brace/icing/whirpool for the past week to make it better asap. However I can feel the ligaments that I sprained pull when i move my foot most of the time and it's not excuriciating pain..definately can tolerate it, especially to play --

I was just curious if playing on it so soon will make it a lot worse.? Like how long does it usually take for sprained ankles to fully recover.?
Mine was very swollen/bruised. It still is bruised, but a lot better.

I want to play Monday and practice tomorrow..but I'm not sure if that would worsen it for the further state games to come this week. After this week of states our season is over so i'd rather play on it hurt than sit on the side lines. Share any info you have with me please!Health Question & Answer

Firstly i have to say that i fully understand you wanting to play hockey tomorrow but i hope i can make you understand that it may be unwise.
Ligaments have very little blood supply and therefore when they are sprained / strained / torn they take a long time to fully repair. I usually tell my patients 6 -8 weeks off sport. However, there are varying degrees of strains etc ranging from a minor twinge to a complete rupture.
Ligaments hold joints together and therefore if they are ruptured the joint becomes unstable. This over time will lead to a increased wear and tear and the onset of traumatic arthritis.
You say you only sprained your ankle a week ago. At this stage the tissues are very fragile and i would be surprised if you could actually manage a game of hockey without excessive pain!
Pain is there for a reason, it is to protect the joint and if you ignore it and play on you will cause further damage.
My professional advice would be to rest your ankle and get it right for next season. You have many years of sport left in you and you don't want to suffer in the future.
If you were my son / daughter i would be talking to the coach and getting you to see a physiotherapist as soon as possible to received the correct advice in order for you to rehab this ankle back to its full potential.
Hope this helps.Health Question & Answer
