The problem is this, if you have the hardware removed then you are going to feel the effects of the arthritis significantly more. The hardware was placed in there to stabilize a fracture and it doesn't allow motion. Now if it was removed the muscles and ligaments that normally stabilize this have atrophied and lost the proprioceptive feeling that would be there. You are more likely to re-fracture the ankle than not. The hardware stops movement and with the hardware gone there is going to be more use of the ankle. If you are not seeing a podiatrist then see one at least for a second opinion about this.Health Question & Answer

My son has some metal holding his ankle together too. He was doing kickflip 360's down a flight of 10 stairs on his skateboard round at St Mary's Cathedral and something went wrong on re-entry. Anyway, I have arthritis in my shoulder. The problem with that is that it degenerates and weakens to bones and joints to the point where they are like sponges.. they don't hold together. My shoulder is completely F$%@#D.

If you got arthritis there in your ankle, the only reason your ankle is holding together is probably the steel plate. Health Question & Answer

Can't add much more to what Icy and Richard have already said.
If you have the screws removed the ankle would move more and the pain would likely increase.

U should listen to your doctor, if u doubt his advice then get a second opinion. I use these compressive thermal ankle supports which healed my arthritis pain & helps maintains joint mobility.Health Question & Answer
