I had that on both my feet and it sucked.
I also played soccer.
The shots they give you are to numb it up so you can't feel them cut the nail back.
For me, the shots did hurt pretty bad, but I have a very low pain thresh hold and I think I was already pretty much expecting pain, which may have made it worse.
Afterwards, it was pretty tender and hard to walk on, and my doc told me to wait 5-6 weeks, then if I felt better, I could go back to soccer.
Overall, I'm glad I do not have to deal with the grossness and pain anymore. I played soccer with ingrown nails for years and the pain just got worse, then my mom noticed and freaked out and took me too a doctor.
My doc also said that my toes will still be kinda pink forever and that's the extent of the damage.
And you'll want to look at them often to make sure the nail doesn't grow back into the skin since the doc will probably cauterize them(which you can't feel at all, luckily).

Hope this helpsHealth Question & Answer

I agree with the previous answer on how to help relieve it yourself. As far as the Podiatrist, if they give you any shots, they aren't too painful. They feel like any other shot, which usually aren't too fun. :)

One thing you can try to do to avoid future ingrown nails is to trim your nails straight across and not too short. If they are being trimmed short and/or curved, it makes room for those painful buggers to start forming.

Good luck. That's definitely a painful thing to deal with. Health Question & Answer

you can soak your foot in warm water till it get's mushy, and use dental floss or wooden cuticle stick to lift up the corner of the nail and cut it. you can also use anbesol (numbing medicine, it's the same stuff xylocaine 20% over the counter) or similar for ingrown nails at the drug store and get some stuff for ingrown nails to soften it too. All I know is it will feel better once the sharp edge of the nail embedded in the skin will help/ Health Question & Answer
