Question: Picc Line pulled out at work.?...help.?
I work in a hospital and today I was helping a patient take his shirt off and his picc line fell to the floor. I really dont think i pulled it out, because i was very careful and watched what i was doing. It acted like it was resting in the sleeve of his shirt. Anyway, is this dangerous for a picc line to be pulled out.? could my job be at jeopardy.?Health Question & Answer

I doubt you will be fired, but I suggest you notify a physician or supervisor. A picc line comes out much easier than it goes in but if the patient is without it or it is inserted incorrectly it can kill them due to air in the blood stream. Health Question & Answer
A PICC line is VERY long. It goes all the way to their heart.
Are you sure you fully pulled it out.? Or did you maybe just break it.?
Either way I hope to God that you DOCUMENTED and REPORTED what happened.?
Because the line is in a main vein that goes to the heart, the patient can bleed very heavily if pressure is not applied straight away for at LEAST 15 minutes.
If pressure is not applied the patient can loose a LOT of blood risking their life.
If you DID document and reported it straight away then no your job is not in jeopardy. BUT if you have not reported or documented it straight away, then yes you could loose your job because of legal ramifications. Risk to patient. And failure to report to person in charge. And lot's of other things.
PICC lines run a HUGE RISK of infection at the best of times.
