I believe that I have a Sternum Injury?!

Question: I believe that I have a Sternum Injury.?
Last night I was rough housing with my older brother and was hit in the middle of my chest with his elbow. I was experiencing pain when I took a deep breath, and the area was sore. I woke up this morning and the area feels sore like a bruise.

1. Did I bruise my sternum, or should I see a doctor for a chest X-ray in case of fractures.?

2. What are a couple home treatments for the pain until I can get an appointment.?

Answers:
It's quite possible you suffered a contusion to your sternal area. I doubt yuou actually fractured it as the sternum is very, very difficult to break. Much more likely you may have injured the cartilage which joins the ribs and sternum together. X-rays are really of very little benefit unless you are having other problems (like being severly short of breath). Tylenol, advil, aspirin are very effective analgesics for mild to moderate pain. Heat is also helpful. If you did injure your cartilage than your pain may actually get worse in the next couple of weeks and may require a steroid treatment Health Question & Answer
