Can you avoid getting an IV all together if you're not having any sedation or pain meds for a colonoscopy?!
Question: Can you avoid getting an IV all together if you're not having any sedation or pain meds for a colonoscopy.?
I hate being stabbed in the hand with that crap...it feels like rusty barbed wire tearing your veins out.
Can I avoid this, or do I have to have it so I don't get dehydrated.? Again, I will NOT be having any paid medication or sedation for this procedure.Health Question & Answer

You will want pain meds for this procedure. They can numb the IV insertion site before "stabbing" you. They need IV access in any event that you have an emergency, rarely, but it does happen.... it's not for hydration...Health Question & Answer
You need the IV for several reasons. One is for hydration and the other is just in case something does goes wrong and you need emergency surgery. In that case they will knock you out completely. I managed to talk my way out of the IV the first time; but, the last three it was what I had to agree with in order to get my doctor to agree to no sedation. Best to be safe. Health Question & Answer
