The first answer is correct. Soak them in warm/hot water to soften before cutting. My husband has to use wire cutters on his toenails and I smooth the corners with an emory board. Health Question & Answer

How you trim them is less important than treating the underlying problem. The thickness is caused from a nail fungus that will continue to worsen if it goes untreated. Prescription medicines are available to heal the fungus, but they can be hard on your liver. A good home remedy is to soak them in Listerine for fifteen to twenty minutes (I use the generic Wal-Mart brand) several times a week for awhile. You will notice the improvement in appearance as they grow out. Good luck to you.Health Question & Answer

Thick toenails are a sign of inflamitory prostate-itis. It is common but also dangerous. You should treat this right away by using a belt sander and fork to get them to a paper thin diameter.

Once this is done soak them in rubbing alcohol and squeez lemon juice on them.Health Question & Answer

you may have to file them down so the clippers can get a good grip. you may want to soak to soften the nail.
