Question about sciatica..?!

Question: Question about sciatica...?
I have suffered with this horrible pain around my hip area for many many years, however sometimes it flares up and is worse than others.

So much so I'm literally dragging my leg.

It can just come all of a sudden with no warning and i sort of collapse down on my leg in pain it feels like a bad dead leg.

Its always the right side

My Dr sent me for a lumbar spine X ray yrs ago and nothing was found to be the cause, so i have just got on with it.

However after looking up my symptoms they are classic of sciatica.

When it gets very bad i get it twisting down into my calf/shin.

When i massage DEEP into my Buttocks area its relives it a bit, the pain also goes in to my Right Groin at times.

Is there anything i can do as its really affecting my life and i feel so useless when it gets bad.

Is there anything the Dr can prescribe me or do people with sciatica just have to live with it .?

If you suffer with it what is your pain like .? is it bad.? and what do you do to ease it.?

Please only answer if you know about it or have suffered it dnt help yourself to 2pts and say go to the Dr i know i need to go and i will but for now id like you to share with me what you know.

Thanks in advanceHealth Question & Answer

I have the same problem with my right side too. Somebody answered my .?.? on here the other day and gave me a site called necksolutions that had exercises. I am now walking better and the pain has subsided after just 3 days of these exercises. I have also found walking around in a higher heel shoe helps, I typically wear flat shoes. The exercise basically involves stretching my back and legs in an arch.Health Question & Answer

I had this when i was preggo. Go to a chiropractor or physical therapist, or massage. All of these people helped me.
First get it diagnosed by the Doc.
There's this stretch that i did you extend your leg and rotate your foot inside and then stretch.
Good luck it totally sucks. I had it for like 3 mths at the end of my pregnancy. I limped everywhere like a big shamoo:)Health Question & Answer

I know exactly what you are going through. I have had a mild cases of it before and treat problems like this every day in my clinic. Sciatica is a name for an irritated sciatic nerve. The irritation can be due to a bulging disc putting pressure on the nerve, nerve getting pinched in the spine, pressure on the nerve as it goes between two muscles in the buttocks or the nerve getting over stretched just to name a few. The way to test for sciatica is to lie down on your back and lift your leg up high with your knee straight. If your symptoms get worse its a good sign you have sciatica. Sounds like you may have piriformis syndrome if massaging your buttocks helps with your pain. Here some more info on it:

I would highly recommend you try physical therapy. There is so much they can do for problems like this. You do need to see a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis then see a physical therapist. Doctors can also prescribe special drugs to ease nerve pain. They will help you. Mean while do not sit in a recliner with your leg up. That does stretch the nerve and irritates it. Just remember this. There is a reason why your pain comes on, you just have not discovered it and you keep doing the same thing creating the same problem. This is not like a migrane where it come on for no reason. Pay close attention to what you do, how you move, stand etc because there is always a cause.

Good luck ,hope this helpsHealth Question & Answer
