Any body ever had or had repaired a tear in your cartilage?!

Question: Any body ever had or had repaired a tear in your cartilage.?
I have had a doggy knee from when young. I used to be a gymnast and I loved exercise all my life so my knees have been well used and as I'm in my forties they are going to have to last for a fare while yet.

Even though I had knee problems when young as I have gotten older it has caused me problems as my knee has given way and I have fallen down the stairs - my other knee if total unaffected. I have fallen going up the garden path and I once fell whilst running across the road for a bus and my face smacked the pavement so hand I'm surprised I did not loose some teeth. The fall was not caused by me tripping but by my knee literally giving way from under me and I went flying - had I have been in the middle of the road when it happened I could have been killed.

Going down stairs is a worry as it seem to make the knee feel more un-steady. It feels like the knee cap is bending and twisting. I am also fearful of putting my weight on it whilst going down stairs and steps, all be it even though I'm only 7? stone as it feels like it will not hold me.

I went to the dr who sent me to the hospital as he could feel my knee clicking and crunching when he examined it and he said you can always tell when someone has been active as their knees go and those with good knees have been less likely to have used them to damage them.

I then went for an MRI scan and this showed I had a tear in my cartilage. The hospital dr told me only that fact and not what that actually meant. He then stupidly said how was my knee now as if it was going to have gotten better after 30 odd years and I said, as normal - meaning the same as when I reported on my first visit. He then said, ow, its normal! As in normal. I said no, as normal meaning the same as before and still unsteady etc.

The one I saw on the second visit was a different one to the first visit who was lovely. This one wanted to be and out and after telling me about this tear clearly felt that was it and I was supposed to know what it meant and he clearly wanted to go. I said well are you going to do something about it.? He said well I could put a camera down but I can't guarantee that it will help. I said again, that as I have fallen and if I have to run even a short distance, even slowly, to catch bus or some thing then it is likely to give way and I can't have a knee that I am fearful of causing a nasty accident to me. I live alone so if I fall no one will be there to help me.

So I came away with no information about what this camera was and what they do with it and I felt he was the worst dr I have seen in a long while. He clearly was not receptive to discussion even when I attempted to indicate that I am patient - you doctor - so should you not be explaining.?

I am now down to have a general anesthetic to have this camera thing done but what does it do, as I'm assuming the camera is so that they can see inside to do something with it - but what.? And if you have it done can you explain if it did any good.? as I feel like if this is how he is before I have it done how competent is he to do it. Thanks. Health Question & Answer

Same problem 10 yrs ago.Had the camera thing and a repair done at the same time. Its done by keyhole surgery....that is to say you are a Hospital day case and there are two small scars one each side of the knee about half an inch in length. No bad after effects at all and I can`t see my scars now and have never had any trouble since, great resolution to a worrying problem at the time.I wish you luck.Health Question & Answer
