There are a multitude of reasons for "chronic" back pain.
You do not mention the location of the back where pain is experienced, however suspect it is in the lumbar region, as this is the area of the back that carries the entire upper body weight if accessory muscles aren't helping to carry the load and where most people with back pain experience discomfort.
Not sure if you googled 'chronic back pain' but pulled up some interesting sites. also searched 'herniated disc' in yahoo.
