What does it mean to have fluid behind the knees? What causes it and how to alleviate it?!

Question: What does it mean to have fluid behind the knees.? What causes it and how to alleviate it.?
I went to see an Orthopedic Surgeon about my knees because I was having trouble bending them or straightening them.

He basically told me to do exercises and gave me a sheet that was printed in 1998 with some suggested exercises.

Which helps a little bit but I noticed that if I wear my MBT shoes which I love (those are the ones that have the thick soles that are shaped like the bottom of a boat). My knees are fine. Of course, on the weekends I do not want to look like dowdy mom, so, I wear my high heeled boots and I am back to achy knees by the end of the day.

What else can be done without medication or surgery.?Health Question & Answer

Dowdy Mom.?.?.?

Excessive fluid accumulates behind patella (knee cap) in the presence of trauma to the knee. Might suspect torn miniscus.

Can try applying a neoprene knee support you can buy at the drug store. There will be a little hole in it for the patella. Try not to get it too tight as to cut off blood flow to the lower leg and foot, nor to keep the knee from bending as this will moot the whole point. The support is designed to push the fluid back into the tissues where it can be absorbed as it should be and keeps it from future accumulations. Course, it does look dowdy if you wear a dress.Health Question & Answer

First off, there's liquid in your knees - in case you didn't know that.

Sometimes that liquid becomes infected and may cause problems with the joint (stretching and walking up/down stairs can be troublesome and painful). You can treat this by seeing a physical therapist - they can give you an ultrasound on your knee. The ultrasound works as a microwave - the waves heat up the bad/infected fluid in your knee to help the liquid heal itself. also, antibiotics can help the infection to clear up.

also, exercise and stretch daily! This will also help.

Surgery is an option but it rarely works. I wouldn't recommend it.Health Question & Answer
