Question: "Is it physically possible to straighten someones curved spine when they have nearly reached physical maturity.?
I have got a kyphosis in my spine and i need to know if i can get a major operation and whether i will have a straight spine after the operation. I have to consider the risks, if the operation is going to work, before i get it done.Health Question & Answer

you need to talk to an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal surgery. it is a VERY DANGEROUS procedure but the doctor will go over everything with you, i would recommend that you research the best doctors around the country, don't just go with the local one s/he may not be the best.

there are a few different options for kyphosis, but it depends on which kind you have.

Congenital kyphosis requires corrective surgery at an early age, so I'm gonna say that's probably not what you have.

Scheuermann's disease is treated with a brace and physical therapy. Occasionally it will require surgery but rarely.

It can also be caused by multiple compression fractures due to osteoporosis but I'm guessing you're not old enough to have osteoporosis, so I'll rule that out.

Kyphosis can also be caused by infection or tumor, these forms of kyphosis need to be treated more aggressively, often with surgery and medications.

Surgery may not be needed for you but you need to see a specialist as soon as possible, the faster you get it checked out the faster you can start the road to recovery. Oh and no surgery can ever guarantee anything, so no there is no real guarantee that you would come out with a completely straight back but there is a good chance that you will come out with less or no pain at all.
I hope this information helps, get it taken care of ASAP!Health Question & Answer

Kyphosis can be reversed, but it depends on the cause of the kyphosis and whether or not there has been degeneration of the bones or discs.

Surgery isn't usually necessary if you have developed this simply from years of bad posture - stretching, exercises, and consciously maintaining good posture works for this type of problem.

If the kyphosis is caused by bone or cartilage degeneration, there may be surgical options, but people often end up trading one problem for another.

Start with a chiropractor and see if they can help you straighten it on your own. If the chiropractor doesn't' help, then maybe its time to talk to an orthopedic surgeon to discuss your optioons. Health Question & Answer

If kyphosis correction is anything like scoliosis correction, I'd say that you almost never get a completely straight spine. A lot of the correction depends on how flexible your spine is. But if someone has pain, it usually has come from the curve being closest to where it is now. So if you get some correction, you should have a lot, if not all, of your pain reduced.Health Question & Answer

What is CAUSING your kyphosis.? How would surgery fix the cause.? Spinal surgeries are very dangerous procedures and always have permanent consequences ('side-effects').

What has your family Chiropractor suggested for you.?

Best wishes and good luck.Health Question & Answer
