2 parts to this question. First, how to stop the bleeding. Have him pinch the spot below the hard bridge of his nose for 10-15 mins. No peaking. Just sit upright and tilt forward a little. If he tilts his head back the blood will run down his throat and he swallows it. Blood can upset his stomach and he might throw up. So tilt forward just a little while holding pressure, constant steady pressure. Not hard, and no peaking.
Part 2, how to PREVENT this... Lets take for granted he's not a huge coke head, no bleeding disorder and no blood pressure issues... Its most likely because his nose is dry. This time of year the humidity is low and peoples nose dries out. So any little thing can crack a little vessel loose and make it bleed. Use some type of Saline Nasal spray. Cheap, over the counter Saline. NOT afrin type... Just SALINE. Just to moisturize his nose. Simple fix...Health Question & Answer

Honestly, don't worry about it. Unless it is a steady stream or worse it is probably just a nose bleed. Don't worry. You said it runs in the family to have a vessel very close to the skin; the cold can bring on dryness which in turn brings on nose bleeds. 3-4 in a week in not uncommon with what you say is wrong. My boyfriend has them nearly everyday, he is just prone to them. His nose dries out very easy and he also has blood vessels near the surface of the skin. If you think that something besides that is the cause of the nosebleeds, ask your doctor if there is anything you could do to help lower the amount that occur. Otherwise, don't be worried, and if it gets worse, go to the doctor. :)
Hope I helped some!Health Question & Answer

Epistaxis is the correct medical term.Gauze packing may be inserted to absorb blood, stop dripping, and exert pressure on the ruptured blood vessels.also humidifiers help if you live in a dry climite There are a number of things that can cause it.And did they ever find what caused it in his father sounds like it is hereditary. And your son should be tested to find the underlying cause.Health Question & Answer

Hold his nose and have him keep his head up. Keep pressure on it for at least four minutes without looking. Don't let him blow his nose today as it will dislodge the clot that is keeping it from bleeding. Putting some moisture in the air will help to prevent some nose bleeds. Use a small humidifier. I don't know how old your son is but I would have his blood pressure checked. Nasal packing or cautery is no fun.Health Question & Answer

you want him to put his head in between his knees, put his face in the fridge/freezer, or just put ice on the top part of his nose, and get nose spray and that should help. i used to get nose bleeds all the time. the teachers would call my mom they were so bad. you could take him to the doctor too. this is just what the doctor told me to do. hope it helps =D (pinch/plug his nose when your doing all of this)Health Question & Answer

When ever a nose is dry it tends to bleed. Ask your son if he has a dry nose. If he says no you might just wanna call his doctor's nurse (you can ask on the phone) and she/he will tell you what to do.Health Question & Answer
