Help with a Doctor/Back pain question...need advise!??!?!

Question: Help with a Doctor/Back pain question...need advise!.?.?!.?
My husband was in a bad car accident about 2 months ago. Directly after the accident he had an MRI done, due to lower back pain. The MRI revealed 2 bulged discs and 2 protruding discs. We have seen about 4 doctors since then, trying to figure out what the next step is. He is in pain usually all day everyday. (He is currently taking ibuprofen and muscle relaxers.) He did about 2 weeks physical therapy only and then began seeing a chiropractor for adjustments also.

So far the only thing that gives him temporary relief are the adjustments. My question is: Does he need to continue physical therapy....(tens machine, aqua massage) or can he just do the adjustments.? also, what is pain management.? So far the regular doctors have not wanted to prescribe anything for his pain other then ibuprofen. Some doctors say he will get better, others say he will deal with this forever. We are very confused and I am concerned about him. I do not want him to be in pain. Is looking into a pain management doctor the right thing for us to do.? Should we wait and see what happens.? what will they do for him that the regular doctors have not.?

Personal Experience and advise will help. Thanks!Health Question & Answer

I feel I can offer a decent opinion on this.

I've seen chiropractors after an accident that resulted in disc damage. And it did help...for a short while. Then I noticed that fifteen minutes after the adjustments, I was in pain again. So...not much gain.

The PT also helped...for a few minutes...then right back to pain again.

You need to see an orthopedist or neurologist, and good luck with this.Health Question & Answer

Both the adjustments and the TENS and aquamassage are passive forms of treatment. One reason your husband is not getting any relief is that he needs active treatment that HE can perform once he leaves the office. Adjustments and TENS does no good if he's in pain again by the car ride home.

I would recommend a more active form of treatment that focuses on showing him how he can manage and correct his pain once he leaves the office. I recommend a practicioner who is certified in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. You can find someone at: http://www.mckenziemdt.org

...it's a little early for pain management doctors who usually only cover up the symptoms with medication.Health Question & Answer
