Question: I had a ACL reconstuction on my left leg October 30. 2008, I can't walk and I can't bend it but only half way..?
Then I went in to the Doctor December 10th and on December 11th I was being put under and they broke up the scar tissue. I still can't do nothing with it. I have had 5 surgery's on this one knee and I think it may have been one to many. I go to PT 4 times a week and they get frustrated with me and I get frustrated. Please someone tell me what can be wrong.Health Question & Answer

One of the problems that you have is scar tissue. No one can predict when it will occur. Cleaning it out hopefully will help but in some cases it doesn't. There are many techniques to working an anterior cruciate ligament after surgery but this is somewhat up to the doctor and what procedure was used. The important part is to gain the full range of motion of the knee. I would have you doing wall slides if they are not all ready being done. That is where you are lying on your back with the buttocks in against the wall and the legs straight up on the wall. Slowly lower the left leg down the wall while keeping the heel in constant contact with the wall. This does two things. One it builds up the strength of the leg and two it creates mobility in the knee. You feel more confident in this procedure as you are the one in control not the therapist. There are other techniques that you and the therapist should be doing to strengthen the leg with special emphasis on the hamstrings.Health Question & Answer

One of the most important things to remember about repair to the ACL is that it will be scarred straight after surgery and needs time to heal properly before taking up exercise, otherwise you can do more damage.

A relative had theirs replaced, was not allowed to do any exercise for three months following surgery and only then was referred for physiotherapy. It was not for six months after surgery that they could resume their normal sports. A neighbour's son had the same, with the same period of recuperation.

Be patient, and be carefulHealth Question & Answer

Nothing is really wrong that alot of PT and patience won't cure. ACL surgery is pretty dramatic surgery and since you've had previous problems with the knee you should be glad you still have something to work with. Follow your doctor's and PT's advice and you'll be back in action much sooner than if you try to go too quickly. Good luck.Health Question & Answer
