Torn meniscus in knee. Can it get worse?!

Question: Torn meniscus in knee. Can it get worse.?
I hurt my knee and had an MRI. It says possible meniscus tear. I went to the ortho and he doesn't think it needs any immediate attention other than physical therapy. That is not something I want to do at this point. I have continued to work out on it. As long as I can deal with the pain will any harm be done.? Will it get worse.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
The connection between MRI findings of meniscal tears and one's pain is elusive. Such a phenomenon was recently featured in the New York Times titled "The pain is real, but the scan is deceiving." It highlights the inadequacies of imaging in musculoskeletal medicine. In other words, things found on MRIs are often irrelevant. It may be premature to think it will get worse.

Many people with possible meniscal tears lack full knee extension (straightening) and sometimes just restoring the mobility is all it needs.

Continue to exercise as long as it does not make you worse...if you are like 99% of people, avoid excessive knee flexion (such as loaded deep squats).

As mentioned above, glucosamine and chondrotin may be of benefit if you are able to take such a product.Health Question & Answer

try to stay off of it. and take advil everyday for pain and swelling. But when I say to keep off of it I mean, no running or jogging. That can make it worse.

I would strongly recommend getting Glucosamene (I don't know how to spell it). It is an over the counter supplement for joints. My Boyfriend has less than 50% of his meniscus cartilage left in his knee, and they told him he would never be able to run again. He started taking it and it is amazing! You just take it once a day.

He can really tell the difference when he doesn't take it.

also, therapy is really good. And make sure you do your exercises at home

It could tear more, or break off and get into the joint, so your knee would lock up. Worse case scenario, need surgery.Health Question & Answer
