Help after a tonsillectomy?!

Question: Help after a tonsillectomy.?
I and 19 years old and had my tonsils and adenoids out on monday so 4 almost 5 days ago. My doctor said that my tonsils were much bigger than he expected so healing time would be longer. He had told my parents that wednesday would be the worst day, but it wasn't. After monday every day got a little easier and a little more pain free. Today the pain is not bad at all, but i am still taking my medicine. I was taking it every 4 hours, but now about about 6 or 7 hours. I have the bad breath, but that is about it. Sometimes when I eat food i start to feel sick, also, to taste and smell of my own mouth seems to make me feel sick. I feel like I am having the scabbing because it feels like there are things caught in my throat when I swallow. I have heard that when the scaps start to fall off the pain gets worse. Am I just lucky and healing well, or do you think the pain will come back worse. also, any suggestions for the bad breath.?

Thanks,Health Question & Answer

You just had a difficult surgery for an adult. This is usually difficult for kids and more so the older you get. It sounds like your tonsils were pretty big so you'll have a pretty sore throat for awhile. It sounds like you are doing really well. I don't think you will have more pain when the scabs start to slough off. In fact you will probably be more comfortable. You are doing well on your pain medication. So you are on track there. Take it when you need it and at bedtime is a good idea so you sleep better. Have you tried sucking Popsicles for the discomfort.? They are helpful. Anything that isn't an acid or milk based seems to help. also it makes your mouth taste better.

Don't use regular mouth wash at this point. A good trick is to use a teaspoon of baking soda in warm water. You can rinse your mouth with that whenever you want. The baking soda helps get rid of bad tastes and odors. Do that after you have taken care to do good oral hygiene. Floss your teeth, brush your teeth well. Take two minutes to do it getting into all the crevices and be sure to brush your tongue. Sounds odd but it helps. It is probably a little coated by now. Then rinse your mouth with the soda water. That will help with the bad taste and odor. You are probably a little nauseated from the taste and smell in your mouth but also because you are swallowing the drainage. Some of the discomfort you feel in your throat is not really scabs. It feels like it but you have stiches back there that will disolve in a couple of weeks. You have already hit the top of your pain and it should not return like that. If it does or you start running a temperature you should see the doc. Be sure to drink a whole lot. You should feel pretty normal in two weeks from your surgery. Just give yourself permission to feel sick and be lazy for a little while. You sound like you are doing very well. Hope this helps. If there is anything you are really worried about don't hesitate to call your surgeon. That's what you have paid him for. Good luck to you.Health Question & Answer
