I have been told I need a operation on my wrist and am very nervous.?!

Question: I have been told I need a operation on my wrist and am very nervous..?
I have been told by my local hospital that I need a operation to fix my scaphiod bone in my right wrist and I am very very nervous about this due to the fact that I dont like being put to sleep. My problen is that having read up on the intenet about this problem and it has said that the first part of the op I would be awake for. Because of this I would need a injection and I have a fear of needles. I dont belive that I should see inside a therate as this will lead onto other problems for me. If I dont have it done then i've told that it will lead to autheritous.? in a few years. What do I do, I need as much help as you can give me. ThanksHealth Question & Answer

Getting put to sleep and needles is always scary. However, I had my tonsils taken out on Tuesday (it requires general anesthesia) and it really wasn't as bad as I had worried. Ask for a sedative below or something to relax you. They gave me something right before I went into the O.R. that calmed me down and then after being placed on the operating bed/ table thing I don't remember anything until i woke up. If you need the operation then you should do it. Yes it sucks but if it will help make your life less miserable later than its worth it. Plus your younger now than you will be in say a few years so recovery will be that much shorter and easier. You can do it have some faith. Try taking your iPod before hand to listen to while you wait because really, that is the worst part. also if your really too scared to have the operation get a second opinion from another doctor. Sometimes there are alternative solutions to surgery such as acupuncture or medicine. Good luck! :)Health Question & Answer

do the operatation - otherwise it will lead to arthritis in the long term
ask the anaesthetist if he can give you an oral sedative first to help you relax firstHealth Question & Answer
