What causes someone to be an "attention whore" on the internet? Is it a personality disorder?!

Question: What causes someone to be an "attention whore" on the internet.? Is it a personality disorder.?
I know a guy who's in his late 20s. He has a Myspace account, and he's got nearly 1,000 people on his friends list. He's the type of person who likes to receive a lot of comments on his Myspace page, but he hardly ever comments on anyone else's page. He also has over 100 pictures of himself in his Myspace photo albums.

I knew a girl on Livejournal who was like that too. She had a lot of people on her friends list. She loved to receive comments on her journal entries, but very rarely would leave comments for other people's journal entries. She would also constantly post pictures of herself on her journal, etc.

Someone like these two examples could be described as an "attention whore". What causes someone to be like that.? Is it a personality disorder.? Narcissistic.? Histrionic.? Borderline.?
Or is it caused by a lack of attention while growing up.?
Is it some other mental disorder.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You can't diagnose someone based on a myspace page. Personality disorders have to be pervasive--they affect ALL areas of a person's life--work, school, relationships, hobbies, family, everything. So, it would probably mostly depend other aspects of the person's life.
Personality disorders are a mix of genetic and environmental factors, and the interaction between these.
The personality disorder most consistent with being an "attention whore" would be histrionic. Narcissism is as well, but this is with the addition of thinking that you are "above" other people and having a lack of concern for others. It's more of a conceitedness than a "please pay attention to me" kind of thing.
Borderline--well, there would be bigger problems if it were borderline.Health Question & Answer

Well, we all need attention, however, when it is to the extreme like what you describe, there is a good chance you are looking at a narcissistic personality disorder.

Yes, the development of this disorder can be traced back to very early childhood. The child did not receive the necessary attention at a time when he/she should have received it.Health Question & Answer

ATTENTION IS FUN FOR PEOPLE. IT MAKES THEM FEEL LIKE A MOVIE STAR. THEY JUST NEED TO BE LOOKED AT SO THEY DONT FEEL LEFT OUT AND ALONE.. LONLINESS LEADS TO DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE. NOBODY WANTS THAT. PLUS THEY WERENT GETTING NOTICED WHEN THEY WERE GROWING UP.Health Question & Answer
