(even though hypochondria is listed as a factitious disorder in the DSM-IV) but if you think about it, with internet access, if you are a hypochondriac, you worry obsessively about health, then compulsively look up stuff on the internet about diseases and symptoms exhaustively-sounds compulsive. OCD is actually an axis I anxiety disorder, treated with anxiety medication. It would seem to me that it would be worth a try to try asking your doc about OCD medicine which is usually like Paxil or some other SSRIHealth Question & Answer

Like most psychological disorders there is no definable cause, study the background of any mentally ill person and the things that might seem to have resulted in their illness are no different from things that have happened to any number of perfectly healthy people. The fact that there are no physical and easily defined "causes" is why so many people still refuse to take psychological illnesses seriously, dismissing patients as merely "weak" or "trying to get over" Hypochondria is largely treated as joke, but, in point of fact, it can be an extremely severe and debilitating mental condition, and, like most other diseases, it can be treated with accurate therapy. You know I think my father and aunt have this. If I tell him that my kids got something, he goes and gets a shot or gets tested for it too. I don't think he got enough attention when he was a kid. He's extremely emotional and sensitive. He always wanted affection from his parents but they never really gave it. He instead gives affection to my brother and myself.

It can be both.....I understand....I struggle with that one a lot.....and I have legitimate, chronic pain with it, along with a nervous breakdown....hope it doesn't reach that point with whoever you may be concerned about....VERY HARD to treat.Health Question & Answer
