Will breathing into a paper bag do anything for an asthmatic?!

Question:

Answer:
No, breathing into a paper bag would be very bad for the asthmatic patient because you would just be rebreathing CO2. This technique is used when someone is hyperventilating and breathing off too much CO2- to help balance out what is needed for an acid base balance in the body. An asthmatic needs as much oxygen as possible- get them into an open area and have them try to take deep, slow breaths in and out. Use a short acting inhaler if they have one. Do not use a steroid inhaler for an acute asthma exacerbation as it will have no immediate effects and will cause more harm than good. Sometimes it helps to put them in a steamy room to help clear secretions from the bronchial tubes.
