How common is death by aneurysm?!

Question: How common is death by aneurysm.?
My best friend's mother just had one tonight and she is in the hospital. I am incredibly worried to death. Do many people make it out alive after having one.? All of a sudden she started feeling pain in her head and felt cold, we had to put ice on her head. She was so weak and cold, totally out of it, mumbling random words and screaming helplessly. I need some good information on this, no sugar coated bull ****... ThanksHealth Question & Answer

An aneurysm can be nothing or everything. It ALL depends on what portion of the brain it happened it.

Your question, while a real question, is along the lines of... how bad is it if someone pokes me lightly with the eraser end of a pencil... well on your finger you would feel it, on your leg you may not feel it at all.. but in your EYE ... well you get the idea.

When an aneurysm occours it can affect any part of the brain and in as much as any part of the body.

Is there a chance that she could die.? Yes... BUT the fact that she is not dead already means she will probably not. People that die from aneurysms do not typicaly make it to the hospital at all, let alone awake.

There is a very real possibility that the speech or hearing or vision areas of her brain could have been affected. BUT you can have an aneurysm and be unable to speak clearly, but it had not affected any of those areas.

Good luck. I hope everything works out. Health Question & Answer

Aneurysms occur in about 2-3% of people. So, while not extremely rare, they are far from common. Most aneurysm are undetected. They can exist for years in a person without causing noticeable symptoms. If the aneurysm ruptures, it is extremely dangerous. Many factors affect the outcome but location of the aneurysm is one of the most important factors. When a brain aneurysm ruptures, it causes a stroke because the area of the brain that was being supplied with blood by the blood vessel with the aneurysm is now not getting the blood it needs. Depending on the location in brain, the effects can be very serious, including death. also important is the age, general health and the time it takes to get into proper treatment. Smoking can increase your risk of an aneurysm. So, unless you have a family history of aneurysms or smoke you probably shouldn't worry about it much. Exercise and live a healthy lifestyle and your odds of an aneurysm are very low.Health Question & Answer

Yes some do make it and go on to have another chance at life
As for stats on this subject - it differs according to the country you live in and the factors influencing them - and probably it depends on the standard of post aneurysm care too

she's still alive so chances are really good that she's going to make it. there can be complications such as bleeding on the brain but if she's at the hospital they will be monitoring her very closely.Health Question & Answer

Depends on the type....for a brain aneurysm....About 25% of people die within 1 day, and another 25% die within about 3 months. Of those who survive, more than half will have some sort of permanent disabilityHealth Question & Answer
