THe coughing wwas quite bad in the first week then has tapered off, but I still get mornings where I cough up smoker's sputum. How long does this cleaning process go on.?Health Question & Answer

It depends on how much and how long you smoked, I did a pack a day for 27 years and cleaned sputum for over 4 months.

It takes longer than we might expect. Just attribute this to your lungs repairing themselves. I can personally tell you I had trouble with bronchitis and sinus infections for almost one year before everything stabilized out. I am now cigarette-free (I still use nicotine gum when necessary) for 11 months. Good luck and kudos for trying to quit!!!Health Question & Answer
I remember learning it can take up to two years for your lungs to fully heal depending how long and how much you smoked.
