Answers:
A few years back I had a patient on a ventilator with end stage COPD. His family requested he be taken off the vent and allowed to "pass". This patient was moved into a private room surrounded by his family. He was basically comatose and was breathing only once or twice a moment.death was imminent.or so it seemed. I left work that evening thinking it was only a matter of moments before this patient died. About an hour after I left work I was at the grocery store when I saw the nurse who had taken care of this patient. She told me he had not only awakened, he was sitting up, talking with his family and drinking fluids. This patient went home with his family and lived three more months before dying in his sleep.peacefully.well comparatively peacefully. I learned then not to forcast a time frame for a person's demise. The morphine has a cardiac therapeutic effect as well as helping with pain & relaxation. I agree with the first poster.talk with you Dad's physician and find out the physican's prognosis and find out what can be done to make your dad as comfortable as possible. I think in home hospice might help your dad and you..the whole family to live with end stage lung disease. Hospice is not necessarily about death, but the process of getting through the end stages of disease for the patient and those who love the patient.

You and your family need to sit down with your dad's doctor, He can give you some kind of time line. Remember, make your father very comfortable and make sure he knows he's not a burden to his family and friends, and that he is loved.
You can look up Emphysema on WEB MD and find out a lot of Information, I hope this helped you.
