If an overweight man went to the doctor with a hernia, is the doctor going to turn him away because he is?!

Question: If an overweight man went to the doctor with a hernia, is the doctor going to turn him away because he is.?
overweight.?

My dad has had a hernia for a couple of weeks, and refuses to go to the doctor because he says the doc will just tell him to lose weight first.. But with no apparent attempts to lose weight, I don't see this getting better any time soon..

How do I make him go to the doctor.? also, what happens if a hernia goes untreated.?Health Question & Answer

This largely depends on where the hernia is.. If it is an abdominal hernia (where the intestine has protruded through the rectus abdominis muscle) it is not urgent enough to have surgery right away, although at some point in time it will need to be corrected (the operation is a very simple one).. In this instance your dad may well be told to loose weight for a couple of months first..

If it is an inguinal hernia (where the intestine slips into the inguinal canal) then this would need more rapid attention, as the herniation can slip down into the scrotum, and compress the testicle.. This is a more serious hernia than the abdominal one, as if left untreated it can turn the testicle gangerenous (but that doesn't happen instantly of course)..

no dear.. doctor will not say to go away.... he will obviously do treatment of hernia,

The danger to leaving a hernia untreated is that it is possible for the intestine to get stuck in the hernia, this could block the intestine.. If it is stuck too tightly the blood supply to the intestine can get cut off and gangrene can occur.. This would be a life threatening problem which would require emergency surgery to correct.. That is why it is recommended to repair of hernia before this happens..Health Question & Answer

Okay then.. Getting him to the doctor is going to be hard since most males are just hardheaded sometimes.. Hernia isn't a problem that needs weight loss.. In fact, most hernias get better by themselves.. He may need surgery just to heal it.. And afterwards, people are going to ask him to not lift any heavy stuff..
Now, If the hernia is still left untreated it can cause inflammation(swelling), irreducibilty(facture/dislocation of bone), obstruction(bowel blockage), strangulating(constricting flow of blood supply to a tissue..), and hydrocele(a pathological accumulation of serous fluid in a bodily cavity)..

Don't leave this uncheck, get him there one way or another..Health Question & Answer

Well, the doctor will tell him he should loose some weight, but the fact that he IS over weight will not preclude him from treatment! No doctor worth his weight in salt would tell an overweight hernia suffering patient to, "Go loose weight first", the exercises one would have to do to loose weight would surely aggravate the hernia and may make it worse!
If your father fails to have this taken care of he is in for more increasing bouts of pain associated with the hernia, my guess is that when he reaches his pain threshold, he will be very eager to get this taken care of!Health Question & Answer

I weighed about 300 pounds when I had my hernia operation.. I went in the hospital in the morning and was out by early afternoon.. I had to take a few days off and then take it easy for a week or two.. It is a minor operation and your father should have it done..
Loosing weight will *NOT* make the hernia go away..Health Question & Answer

Hernia leads to more tiredness, and lot of pain! My dad had his hernia operation done some 14-15 yrs bk.. He had these symptoms, i dun know more abt it coz i was a child age 8 or 9..
Tell your father weight is not important n take him to the doc or else it will lead to severe consequence..Health Question & Answer

What part of his body has hernia.? Anyway, i don't think the doctor will do that.. Although weight reduction will offer comfort on the hernia, the doctor will probably perform the herniorrhapy especially when the condition affects the everyday activity of your dad..Health Question & Answer

he will not turn him away............surgery cares MORE risk when the patient is overweight, will the benefit of the surgery outweigh the risks involved......that will depend on where the hernia is located and your dad's overall health..Health Question & Answer

He should go to the doctor as if left untreated, the hernia could strangulate and cause major problems..

The doctor has no right to refuse treatment because he is overweight.. Make him an appointment and tell him just how worried you are about him..Health Question & Answer
