If you are otherwise healthy, an annual rectal prostate exam by your doctor should start about age 40.. Tumors are very rare in younger people.. Most enlarged prostates are benign but do enlarge as a person gets older and may lead to difficulty in urinating.. Rarely, a teenager may contract gonorrhea which could invade the prostate and produce pain and difficulty in peeing.. For most guys, prostate screenings are started around age 50, but if you are at a higher risk by family history or if you are an African-American then screening is usually started at 40..
