Am I the Only One Who Has to Hear Noise To sleep???!

Question: Am I the Only One Who Has to Hear Noise To sleep.?.?.?
I've lived all my life sleeping with a box fan.. It's loud and I love it.. But when it comes to sleeping somewhere else (camps, other ppl's house, etc..) I can't sleep at all..

I was just wondering if anybody else experiences this, too.. And I don't mean like a quiet ceiling fan, either..

Just curious,

Nope, I do the exact same thing :]

I've slept with a box fan on my entire life (my whole family does it, so blame my parents).. I can't fall asleep without it, so like you said, it makes vacations/overnighters difficult..

I actually downloaded a box fan white noise track for my iPod for times like that.. It doesn't work as good as the real thing, but I can fall asleep eventually..Health Question & Answer

Ugh I know what you mean.. You are along with people who need the television or movies to fall asleep..

All it is is a bad habit, I know because it used to happen to me too, I always need a loud fan to fall asleep..

Well it wastes power and is just a plain bad habit, and annoying for anyone else to hear it..

You just need to keep your fan of for the next month or so when you sleep.. During that month you'll easily learn to fall asleep to peace and quiet..

Besides, if you learn to sleep through noise, you might not wake up to an important noise (baby, burglar, fire etc..)..

There is lots of people like this.. Babies for example are so use to loud noise in the womb that they can not sleep in a quiet house.. Lots of parents can't understand why the baby is so fussy and it is because the house is too quiet..
The loud noise must relax you and comfort you.. The sound of the fan could work like white noise.. Your ears normally pick up sounds which the brain translates to something understandable.. In your sleep, if you can hear something that your brain can comprehend, for instance the sound of a conversation, then your brain automatically functions- thus keeping you awake.. The idea of a white noise is to produce a type of noise that is unintelligible in order to cover for the rest of the sounds that you might hear..Health Question & Answer

its called white noise......

basically your mind uses that noise to block out all noises.. Its almost as if when that noise is going, there is no noise you are hearing..

also, since you have been doing it all your life, its like you conditioned your body to go to sleep at the sound of the fan.. I bet if you were sitting on your couch, and a fan was turned on, you would begin to feel real tired..Health Question & Answer

ya, half the time i cant sleep unless the fans on and the radio is turned on, i think its pritty normal, almost everyone in my family does it, i think its just cause ppl get used to it, and after they get used to it, its hard not to use it, like smoking

i really sleep well wen its storming outside, love to hear rain and thunderHealth Question & Answer

I do I need that white noise to fall asleep.. But For me it has to be a consistent sound like the fan you mentioned, or an air conditioner.. If I hear a dying cat outside all night and that's the only noise I hear, I probably might not fall asleep..

But anyway a lot of people are like this.. You're not the only one..Health Question & Answer

I used to be like this.. It was usually when I worried a lot or was depressed, and silence always left me alone with my thoughts.. Troubled thoughts are infinitely more distracting than fans, music, and even traffic.. I am more at peace now, so I can sleep in silence or with any white noise..

I hope this isn't the reason you need noise..Health Question & Answer
