From my observations, I think 5'8 is probably more average than 5'9. I am 5'10.5 and most people think I am six foot and considered tall-- which I am with shoes more or less. Short, I'd say 5'5 or less, tall- 6ft. or more.Health Question & Answer
5'6" and below is short, up to 5'10" is average and above that is tall.
If it helps your figuring I am female and I'm 5'8" you might want to have that to determine if our height plays a part in determining what is short, average and tall.

I'm pretty sure white guys, asian guys, and black guys measure tall at about the same.
Short for me is anything under 5'7", anything over that is average till you get to 6'3".Health Question & Answer

I'm 5'9", and I personally have never had any problems with my height. Height doesn't matter, period. I have a friend who's 5'3" and had a girlfriend. I'm 5'9" and I don't have one.Health Question & Answer
