The reason the doctor checks this area is for testicular cancer and/or a hernia. To do this you could be either standing or lying down depending on what the doctor is checking for. If you fell uncomfortable with something your doctor is doing ask him what he is doing and whether the procedure he is using is the normal way to check for these problems.
