Could be bursitis or arthritis - or - maybe a pulled or torn rotator cuff. If he always uses that arm when he lifts things or uses it first for everything, then repetition can cause aches & pains. The doctor will run tests, order MRI's, and end up sending him to physical therapy & they will tell him to do door knob exercises to strengthen it.
Maybe if he 'lightly' exercised it, the pain might subside. Advil or Ibuprofen helps w/aches, pains & inflammation. Health Question & Answer

If he works on a computer a lot it could be a repetitive strain injury.
Even tiny movements... if done over and over again... can eventually cause injury.
He should go see a physiotherapist.Health Question & Answer
