The best thing you can do is prevent the problem and not treat it after the fact. I assume you are using a typical multi-blade razor and canned shave gel. If you have sensitive skin, which it sounds like you do, that combo is your worst enemy.

I had similar problems when I was younger. After every shave I would get razor burn and ingrown hairs after using a Mach 3 and canned shave gel. I switched to electric and had the same problem, just a little less severe. Plus, electric razors don't give as close a shave as traditional razors.

If your like me, the answer to your problem would be to use a double edge safety razor with tub shave cream and a shave brush.

Some other helpful tips:
1) Shave after a hot shower.
2) Exfoliate your skin.
3) When shaving, first go with the grain, then across, and if necessary against the grain on your third pass. Reapply cream after every pass.
4) Splash your face with cold water after shaving.
5) Use an aftershave balm and/or splash.

If you plan on going the safety razor route, I recommend buying a Merkur HD razor, Derby blades, and Truefitt and Hill or Taylor of Old Bond Street shave cream. I don't know much about brushes yet, but the website has plenty of reading material on them. The main drawback to all this is of course the money. But if you're sick of irritated skin it's well worth it.Health Question & Answer

If it's razor burn, I'd use a more gentle shaving cream and also be a little more gentle with the razor. Try not to shave against the orientation of the hair, since this can injure the skin, which leaves it open to infection. also, please use after shave! That avoids so much agony later. The kind that stings is honestly the best.

There's a good chance that your rash is also caused by an allergic reaction. You may be allergic to the shaving cream you're using, or the gel that comes from your razor (if yours does that). Try different shaving creams or shaving gels. Another alternative is to get an electric shaver. You usually don't need shaving cream with those.Health Question & Answer

Make sure your skin is warm, wet and totally covered with shaving foam.

Use a new razor.

Shave in the same direction of hair growth - I know people say to get a really close shave, you shave the opposite way to which the hair grows but this can cause red bumps.

Make sure you rise the blade of foam and bits of hair, a clogged blade will drag over the skin.

After shaving, wash off any shaving foam residue and apply a non-scented aftershave balm. Health Question & Answer

i suggest to start shower shaving... i used to get razor burn too,,, not anymore ;-)

make shaving the last thing you do before getting out of the shower, the steam and heat soften your beard... use the best safety razor you can find (i have a gillette fusion) and a shave gel, not one that comes in a can, but one in a tube (these are the best for moisturizing)... CHANGE BLADES FREQUENTLY, i suggest a new blade at least every 2 weeks...

try it!Health Question & Answer

Experiment with different razors and creams. I shave in the shower using Oil of Olay instead of shaving cream. I find that shaving at the sink is a nasty experience because my skin never relaxes properly and my face looks red and swollen afterwards. I find that moisturisng cream softens the skin.Health Question & Answer

I got the rash, spots, bumps, itching etc etc. Then I bought a decent electric and never looked back. Razors cut your skin, electrics do not.Health Question & Answer
