This is not Men's Health, but if you're talking about the British American colonies, I know the answer anyway...
Basically, the separate colonies had no connection with each other, they communicated more with London than they did with each other. Ben Franklin's newspaper was the first real way of linking the colonies together.
As for the differences between them; the southern colonies were "slave societies" meaning their structure revolved around slaves, without them the colonies would collapse. In the north, however, there were "societies with slaves" in which, although slaves were present, the colony did not revolve around them. The treatment was much more lenient and the work less demanding.
