This goes back to the story of Onan. His brother was married, but then died, At the time, it was God's Law that if a man dies, his brothershouldd have children by the dead brother's wife, so that there would be somebody toinheritt his estate.
But Onan was next in line, and HE wanted his dead brother's estate, so it is said that "he spilled his seed upon the ground" instead of impregnating his dead wife's brother.
SInce he disobeyed God, God killed him.
Thus we have the MISUNDERSTANDING that masturbation is a sin. Actually what was sinful was that Onan disobeyed God's order to have children with his dead brother's wife. He could have simply refused to do it, or he could have had her killed. But he CHOSE to masturbate.
Now, it is also God's will that a man "give pleasure" to his wife, and that they should have children if it is God's will. So when a married man masturbates, he is taking the pleasure away from his wife, and that act is sinful. But that sin does not carry a death penalty.
There is nothing else in the bible about masturbation, sinful or otherwise.

Way back in the day when I used to take catechism classes the Catholic priest talked about masturbating and he said it was a sin but not a mortal sin. He explained that its a temptation of the flesh but its not something that God would damn you for eternity over because its not something that corrupts the soul as long as men are repentant. also the bible does mention in the book of Job that it is better for a man's seed to enter the belly of a whore rather than let it fall to the ground. One interpretation of that is that masturbating is a sin. - but still not a mortal sin.
A mortal sin follows along the lines of suicide, murder, rape, child abuse, pedophilia and things of that nature.
But personally I gave up on the catholic church a long time ago too. So I don't think its a sin at all.Health Question & Answer
