Smegma is a mixture of waste products. It has no benefit at all, like other bodily waste products, and needs to be removed at regular intervals for you to stay healthy and hygienic.
As with many other parts of your body, the inner foreskin continuously produces oils which lubricate the glans and foreskin. These collect in the folds of the foreskin and particularly the coronal sulcus (groove) just behind the glans (head) of the penis.
The glans and foreskin also shed skin cells which get 'collected' by these oils. Add to that stale urine trapped in the foreskin if you don't retract to urinate, stale semen and miscellaneous dirt and dust. This mixture forms smegma.
Fresh smegma is not particularly harmful but readily breaks down under the action of bacteria normally present on the penis. As it breaks down it starts to smell and provides a fine set of nutrients for fungal infections and harmful bacteria to multiply.
Circumcised men have the advantage that not only do they not produce the oils from the inner foreskin in the first place but there is nowhere for smegma to significantly collect. Any small amount that is produced gets rapidly removed by contact with clothing and handling during urination and masturbation.

it's dead skin cells and bacteria that builds up under the foreskin.

Its not harmful, but its disgusting. Its just build up of bacteria under your foreskin, clean it. Girls do not like it.Health Question & Answer
