I have not had sexual intercourse for 2 years i am unable to sustain an erection long enough?!

Question: I have not had sexual intercourse for 2 years i am unable to sustain an erection long enough.?
i am a married man of 46 i have had a history of being over weight and of alcohol abuse but this has never caused any problems in the past.
however i can no longer perform sexually with my wife and this is very disturbing for me i can hardly believe it has been 2 years since i have had intercourse.
i am a recently diagnosed diabetic and wondered if this could be the underlying problem when i approached my surgery on the subject i was told that many couples of our age manage a successful relationship without the sex and pretty much dismissed it i could never go back to a doctor after that i feel at a loss of what to do and or who to turn to in the states they would suggest therapy or even a surrogate sex partner to help my dysfunction but this is not an option over here.
to recap i can get an erection manually although it is quite weak but i cannot sustain it long enough for penetration.
please help if you can only serious answers as i consider this a serious matterHealth Question & Answer

Answers:
Both your previous alcohol issues and most certainly your current diabetes are likely to be the cause of your ED problems. They are likely to be physical issues, so neither therapy or a surrogate are going to help you.

You need to ensure that a doctor, and if what you tell me about yours is accurate, probably a new and more useful one, has all your medical issues under good control, especially your diabetes and your cholesterol.

The most likely useful management is simply an ED drug. All diabetics are allowed these on the NHS and also all medicated diabetics are prescription exempt, so they would be entirely free in this instance.

Viagra and its related drugs can be extremely successful in patients like you, but there is no real long term cure.Health Question & Answer

I have a few diabetic male friends who have erectile problems But they are prescribed Levitra by their GP (doctor) apparently viagra is not recomened for diabetics.
If your doctor will not prescribe any drugs to help with your erectile problem you could try one of those online pharmacies (you know the ones who send incesent spam e-mails) Health Question & Answer

You, or others, may mock me, but I willl pray for you, sir. I understand what you're going through. My very dear friend, a man of 55, is going through much of the same, and it makes him very unhappy.Health Question & Answer

Have you tried a different Doctor.?testosterone therapy .?Health Question & Answer

This is such a personal question and I don't mean to pry. Have you discussed this with your wife to see how she feels about this problem.? Maybe she doesn't feel comfortable to start a discussion like this with you and surely wouldn't want to make you feel badly. Hopefully you are still being affectionate with her because having intercourse is not everything. Perhaps it would be wise to get some general counseling to help you with possible feelings you are having regarding weight issues and how you might feel better about yourself. You know sometimes if you just start taking walks and getting a little fresh air and exercise might make you feel better, then things just naturally might start getting better. Best wishes. First off, this is a serious matter. All those bad habits can lead to erectile dysfunction. Diabetes alone can impair circulation and make you impotent and create a host of other problems. I don't feel its too late to reverse this, especially if you can manually get an erection. Start eating right and exercise regularly and not only for erections but your future health. If after 2 months you are not seeing improvement you can get perscription Levitra which works very well. I would also have your testosterone and thyroid levels checked to rule out other problems, especially if your desire is low. Health Question & Answer

Alcohol can be a trigger for diabetes as well as the problem you describe...as can being over weight.

It sounds to me as though your general health isn't what it could be, the excess weight (depending on how severe) could be causing this alone, and alcohol, well, "brewers droop" is a phrase most of us have heard of.

The problem you have is because you have both these possible causes, a doc is unlikely to take your request for intervention seriously.

To compound things, the longer something like this goes on, the more you are likely to think you can't, which makes it more difficult; mental attitude, although cliche, can have a big impact.

I would suggest that you book another doc appointment, not mention it as an aside in another appointment but make an appointment specifically for this. I know this may feel a bit embarrassing, but really you are not alone, it is a very common issue.

Speak to the doc about things, and ask if he/she feels you could make lifestyle changes to help. This makes them feel you are genuinely worried and concerned, and not just casually enquiring.

Viagra etc is available on the NHS if your GP chooses to prescribe it, so it is worth going, as there definitely are things out there that could help you, other than lifestyle changes.

I would strongly advise against any self-medication though, especially as you are diabetic.

Best of luck.Health Question & Answer
