Coughing up blood, what could it be from?!

Question: Coughing up blood, what could it be from.?
This morning I woke up, and the first thing I did was sit up and start coughing, I coughed up blood. So i went into the bathroom and I continued to cough up blood. I have this stringy feeling in my throat, and the blood did not come from my nose, it came from my throat.

last night I had shortness of breath, and bad chest pain.

I know I should see a dr, but I can't until my mom gets home from work tonight..

anything I should do for it until then.?Health Question & Answer

It would be important to quantify the amount of blood you are coughing up. Is it strings of blood or blood tinged sputum where you see streaks of it.? Or are we talking about tablespoons or cups of blood.?

If it is blood-tinged or specks of blood then I wouldn't be too worried. Often, with the irritation and damage from coughing, the mucosa that line your throat will bleed. It's a combination of trauma from the actual coughing and the viral illness you most likely have.

You are right in that you should likely need to go see a doctor to make sure nothing more sinister is happening, but if I were you, I wouldn't be too concerned. It probably feels awful enough already without you over-thinking it.

Some possibilities if you are coughing up tablespoons or cups of pure blood would include a tuberculosis or other fungal infections, cancer, or any of the number of very serious illness. Again, it would be very unlikely in your situation.Health Question & Answer

You can't do anything really so just rest then go and see the doctor asap. I had a chest infection which was pretty nasty and the doc said to see him as soon as there was any sign of blood. It could be anything, but a sign of blood is never a good one.Health Question & Answer

You just described the symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure(CHF). Do you have difficulties laying on your side during sleep. I will suggest that you see a doc A.S.A.P. Your body gives you warning signs before it collapses. I really don't think its a good Idea to wait for your mother. This situation is too serious to be ignored till your mother shows up.Health Question & Answer

the first thing that comes to mind is tuberculosis, but that is generally quite rare in the united states...but you should still be tested so that anyone you may have shared it with (unknowingly) can be checked as wellHealth Question & Answer

happened to my grandma and she went to the DR and she had cancer. So i think you should call your mom and have her leave work now or have a friends mom or neighbor take you to the emergency room.Health Question & Answer

Listen to the doctor. Ditto on getting to your physician and having it checked out.Health Question & Answer
