I lost my mom to ovarian cancer a few months ago. She had been having problems with vomiting off and on over a year or so. At first, we just attributed it to the stomach flu. As time went by, I thought it was a little odd that she kept getting sick out of the blue. At one point, she became dehydrated from vomiting and was acting a little strange. We took her to emergency and they told us that her potassium and sodium levels were off. They gave her IVs and would have sent her home, but I told them I wanted her to stay so they could figure out what was going on. A week later, and more tests than I can count, they did a CT scan and found the ovarian cancer. She was at stage III C by then. The problem with this cancer is that it really doesn't have specific recognizable symptoms. The only symptom my mother had was the vomiting. Who would have thought.? If you have any unexplained symptoms like vomiting, low back pain, pelvic pain, or bloated abdomen, get it checked out. Generally, by the time symptoms show up, the cancer is in an advanced stage. There is no screening for ovarian cancer like mammograms for breast cancer. You have to pay attention to anything unusual going on. My Mom just found out she has ovarian cancer. She only went in because of right side stomach pains. After several tests, they did at CT scan and they found the ovarian cancer. It is stage 4 and that is scary. So if you have any pains in side of stomach or really anywhere, get it checked. They also did a blood test CA-125 and hers was elevated. Normal is 0-35.
