Celexa Citalopram Question?!

Question: Celexa Citalopram Question.?
I started taking Celexa (20mg) January 15th, Thursday about 4 pm. Through the weekend, I experience a myriad of great feelings, and never came down the whole time. Then, Saturday night, I had a drink with my wife, and it basically canceled out all the good moods.

I'm taking this drug primarily for anxiety. I have felt spurts of this happiness and relaxation since then (Sunday afternoon, and for about 3 hours this morning) and now I am not feeling all the spectacular. Just want the anxiety to go away.

Should I up the dosage, talk to my physician, wait it out, try another drug, or what.?Again, I had the best weekend until it stopped working, and it didn't take long for it to start.

Is 20MG enough.? Should I take 2 instead.?

Hello,
Celexa or Citalopram belongs to a class of drugs known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or as we more commonly call them--SSRI's, and is indicated for depression, anxiety, and other associated disorders. There is no benefit usually in increasing the dose, and in fact this may just increase adverse effects or side effects. Definitely, if a change of dose is indicated, it has to be by your doctor. This is really important. Often when beginning these drugs, you do not exeperience the full effect until after a few weeks of treatment....so give the drug a chance to work, or speak to your doc about a different treatment. Hope this helps, i am a community pharmacist, and really it would be beneficial to pop into your local pharmacy and discuss the problems with your pharmacist.Health Question & Answer

It will take a couple of weeks for the effects to settle down. But when they do the result can be very good.

Citalopram is best used in conjunction with a talking therapy such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), which helps change the way you approach situations and deal with your anxiety. (http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mentalhealthinf...

Having suffered with chronic anxiety, it was very helpful to learn ways to deal with it rather than mask the effects.

Do not increase the dose without talking to your doctor and remember this is not the only drug on the market. Give it two to three months with this solution before you decide if it is working for you. If you have not been offered a talking therapy, go back to your doctor and INSIST on a referal.

There is no cure to anxiety through drugs, though they do mask the symptoms and are relatively cheap. The cure comes via talking.Health Question & Answer

I would call the doc. I think you may have something other than plain anxiety. I've been on celexa for nearly a year, when I first started at 20 mgs I was so anxious I shook almost continually the first 2 weeks. The high you described would make me think bipolar, but you shouldn't be able to come down while on the meds if you have that.Health Question & Answer
