Is there ammonia in urine?!

Question: Is there ammonia in urine.?
I hear stories about how soldiers would use urine as a disinfectant for their wounds...
Are they true.?
How and why.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Actually, there is not ammonia in urine, even though everyone seems to think there is. Ammonia is found in our bodies but only momentarily. It is a break down of waste products, But because ammonia is EXTREMELY toxic to the cells in our body it is very important that it's converted to something else, called urea. The liver is the organ that does this. Urea is actually the compound that ammonia is excreted as in your urine.

So basically, ammonia is way to hazardous for our bodies but is a chemical that happens to be made when your body is trying to break down waste products. The body realizes that this chemical can cause harm and immediately alters it so that it can't cause that harm. By altering the chemical, it changes it into a new one called Urea.

I hope this helped and it wasn't too confusing!

Urine is high in nitrates, compounds high in nitrogen and oxygen. Ammonia is made up of nitrogen and hydrogen. (NH3) What you are smelling is the high concentration of bonded nitrogen.

During World War I, the Germans experimented with numerous poisonous gases for use during war. After the first German chlorine gas attacks, Allied troops were supplied with masks of cotton pads that had been soaked in urine. It was believed that the ammonia in the pad neutralized the chlorine. These pads were held over the face until the soldiers could escape from the poisonous fumes, although it is now known that chlorine gas reacts with urine to produce toxic fumes (see chlorine and Use of poison gas in World War I).

Urine has also been historically used as an antiseptic. In times of war, when other antiseptics were unavailable, urine, the darker the better, was utilized on open wounds as an antibacterial.[Health Question & Answer

Yes there is ammonia in urine and they would use it because it kills bacteria along with other germs. You can buy cleaning products with ammonia in them but it can be a harmful chemical if it isn't diluted properly. There isn't too strong of a concentration in urine. also, if it comes out of your body, it can't hurt you. To use your own urine as a disinfectant is a worst case senario thing though. I would try Neosporin, peroxide, or Boroleum first lol. (also people pee on jelly fish stings because it kills the venom and stops the burn temporarily)

***VERY IMPORTANT---NEVER mix ammonia with bleach. The two chemicals combined produce a toxic gas (commonly known as Mustard Gas) which will kill everyone in household. Never play with chemicals. And never flush bleach down the toilet.Health Question & Answer

Yes there is ammonia in urine but it is also loaded with bacteria. It's not a very good sterilizing agent at all but in a survival situation it is a last resort.
This just in: Mandyspl: Your chemistry is way off. Mixing bleach and ammonia makes Chlorine gas. Mustard gas is actually a vapor and is something completely different and a lot more toxic. No, one should not mix bleach and ammonia if they don't know what they are doing. I do so I use it to sterilize things.Health Question & Answer
